Obituary for Willie James Akins

Willie James Akins, 83 affectionately known as "Skeet", passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024 at his residence.

Willie was born on January 17, 1941 in Columbia County, Florida to the late Marie Armstrong (Honey Bee) and the late Charles Akins Sr. After relocating to Gainesville, FL along with his eldest brother Charles and his mother Marie, he spent most of his adolescent years and adult life living in Gainesville and the St. Petersburg area.

After being educated in the Alachua County School System, and graduating from Lincoln High School Class of 1959, he was active in the Marching Band. Willie was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served and was Honorably Discharged in 1965.

Willie went on to become active in the Gainesville area where he continued his love for music. He became a member of the once beloved band known as The Fabulous Soul where he played the Trombone and Bass Guitar. After working at Shands Hospital for a short stint, Willie received his Associate Degree in Fine Arts from Santa Fe College. He then went on to pursue and earn his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Florida. That's where he fell in love with his Florida Gators.

Willie later relocated to St. Petersburg, FL and became the Regional Director for South Side Boys and Girls Club. He would work and develop young boys and girls to become active and productive individuals in Society. He also enjoyed working cross-word puzzles daily and spending time with his beloved dog "Sandy". He had a deep love for Gator Football, steam crabs, and fried fish. His life continues on in those that knew him.

He is survived by his oldest brother, Charles Akins Jr; his loving son, Elder Darryl Akins; daughter, Amber Bannister, five step brothers and sisters; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
